how to run 303 miles in six months

At the beginning of this year I set the following exercise goals for myself to complete by year’s end:

  1. run 300 miles

  2. run a half marathon

  3. bike 500 miles

I’ve never set numeric exercise goals for myself like this before. The numbers are mostly completely arbitrary. I choose these activities and values because I wanted to do them they seemed achievable. 300 miles is only 100 three mile runs! Or 50 six mile runs! Or 75 miles per quarter! As it turns out the first two were so achievable for me that I completed them with six months to spare. I completed the NYRR RBC Half Marathon on May 20th and I surpassed my 300 mile run goal on June 29th.

I’m in the process of drafting another long form post about how my relationship with running has bloomed this year. But for now I’ll say, I track all my runs using Strava. Strava has a fantastic API that I use to download my exercise activity data into my own database. I’ve tracked my progress in an digital tool I built for myself. Of course Strava allows for such tracking/reporting but I had fun making my own little contraption for it. So far this year I’ve spend 41 hours running, spread out over 61 individual efforts. Below is a list of each of them in chronological order. This is how I ran 303 miles in six months.
